GPA is calculated as the weighted average of grade points ร— credit hours. For each course: multiply the grade points by the credits, add them all up, then divide by total credits.

Unweighted GPA = S(Grade Points ร— Credits) รท Total Credits
Weighted GPA = S(Adjusted Points ร— Credits) รท Total Credits
Adjustments: Honors +0.5 ยท AP/PSEO +1.0 (capped at 5.0)

Do colleges require weighted or unweighted GPA?

Most colleges ask for both. Unweighted GPA is the standard comparison; weighted GPA shows academic rigor. Always include your grading scale and weighting method on the transcript so admissions offices can interpret it correctly.

How many credits should a course be worth?

One Carnegie unit (1.0 credit) equals roughly 120โ€“180 hours of instruction over a full year. A semester-long course is typically 0.5 credits. Most homeschool students earn 24โ€“28 total credits over four years of high school.

Should I include Pass/Fail courses in the GPA?

No. Pass/Fail courses (like PE or music) earn credits toward graduation but should not factor into the GPA calculation. List them on the transcript separately with a "P" or "F" in the grade column.

Does the weighted GPA cap at 5.0?

This calculator caps individual course weighted points at 5.0. Some schools use different scales, always document your weighting method clearly on the transcript so colleges know how to interpret it.
