Kentucky Homeschool Law: KRS § 159.030

Kentucky homeschool law is governed by KRS § 159.030. Before the start of each school year, parents must submit a Home School Notification to the local school board in the district where they reside. This notification is filed annually, it is not a one-time registration. No standardized testing is required, and there is no requirement to submit a portfolio or course records to any government office.

Kentucky requires 185 days of instruction per year, five days more than the 180-day standard used in many other states. Parents determine their own curriculum and set their own graduation requirements. You issue the transcript as the home school administrator.

GPA Calculation for Kentucky Homeschoolers

GPA is calculated the same way in every state: multiply each course’s grade points by its credit value, sum all products, and divide by total credits. The standard 4.0 scale applies to most courses. Honors courses typically add 0.5 points; AP and dual-enrollment courses add 1.0 point for a weighted GPA.

Always report both weighted and unweighted GPA on your transcript, clearly labeled. Include your complete grading scale (e.g., A = 93–100 = 4.0) so admissions reviewers understand exactly how grades were assigned.

Common Mistakes Kentucky Homeschoolers Make
